St Patrick’s Cathedral
St. Patrick’s Cathedral History
Founded in the 12th century St Patrick’s is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture and home to a number of important historical artifacts, including the shrine of Saint Patrick. Jonathan Swift, one of our greatest authors (Gulliver’s Travels) and a social crusader, was Dean of St. Patrick’s from 1713-45. Swift’s grave is marked by a simple brass plaque on the floor at the west end of the Cathedral. A little known fact is that the impressive spire was only added in 1749.Drop by in the evening and you may catch the choristry school singing Evensong. A very special experience. The adjoining park is small but perfectly formed, beautifully planted and a favourite with local dog owners for morning and evening doggy playtimes. It also hosts a small craft market on Sundays and you’ll find a little café tucked away in the corner.
